Title: A debate.

Kazokumaru - September 7, 2007 06:22 PM (GMT)
I would just like to know something. Out of all the girls who read this, how many of you want equality between the sexes? I know I do. But this doesn't just mean you have all our rights.

In gym class today we were playing dodgeball. If you get hit, you have to go do 5 push-ups. The teacher said, "ONLY girls may do push-ups from their knees."

You are our equals. I agree 100%. It doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl to do physical activity. I know some girls who could destroy me in a fitness test. Yet in classes, they do push-ups on their knees. The teachers let them. Anything we can do, you can do just as well.

I spoke to my gym teacher briefly about it, and it sure looked like he was thinking about it. It is sexist to believe a guy can do better push-ups than a girl. For BOTH groups. It means more is expected from the guys, and it implies the girls are weaker. These ARE NOT true, and SHOULD NOT be continued!!!

Females fought for their equality, I say it's time we fought for ours.

drawring of a key - September 7, 2007 07:05 PM (GMT)
Eh. At the same time, ever heard of the glass ceiling?

I agree with you, though. With ethnicity or gender or whatever, whichever group is currently the "minority" fights long and hard to gain equality, but the truth is a lot of people don't just want to be treated equally to everyone else. They want to be treated better.

Kazokumaru - September 7, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
The point I was trying to make, is a lot of people I know, half and half male and female, act like girls can't do the fitness stuff we can. So, either we are allowed to do knee push-ups, which I would NOT bother doing, or everyone has to do the same stuff. Like the military, it's the same way. Girls need to do LESS. They need to do FEWER push-ups to pass the fitness test. They have a wider weight range. There are some girls I know that are like, I want equality. So I want to be able to choose to do knee-push ups or normal ones. But that's not equal. And KE, I'm glad at least one person agrees with me.

I just asked a ladyfriend if she thinks it matters what gender you are when it comes to sports. She said no it doesn't matter. I asked her if she agrees with girls being allowed to do less work in Phys. Ed. She thought for a minute, then said she "guesses not". I really hope this is changed in my school at least.

Hawkstorm - September 7, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
I, actually, do agree. Girls should be treated just like guys, in every aspecyt. Why, today I accidently half-tripped my friend in soccer during CC practice and if we do that then we have to do push ups. So rather than being a sissy and doing girly pushups, I did regular ones. I've ran a 5:30 mile and am proud of it. So I don't think just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can be physically fit and able to do stuff guys can do. Girls just pretend to be lazy and 'OMG I broke a nail!' Heck, I don't have nails (I bite them off :sweatdrop: ), so I don't care. I don't spend an hour on my hair, or care what I wear (Well I do, but I grab jeans and a T-shirt and am happy)

[/randomstufforz]

Anyway, I do think it's crap that we get less credit for everything (Such as jobs and wages) when we can do it just as good as a guy could do.

Kazokumaru - September 7, 2007 10:35 PM (GMT)
I mean, the level of it. Guys are expected to be able to life heavy things. So a lot of girls who otherwise could be incredibly ripped expect a guy to do it for her. I have to admit, I do do this for girls, but that's just the laws of attraction.

One of my teachers does that x.x She doesn't think I can lift a box of books (They are kinda heavy, but I weightlift for crosscountry so It's lighter for me than to some people) and I literally have to argue for a while before she finally lets me move the box xD

(at the time of this post i have 493 posts awsome arecus)
what the?
now thats annoying ALL the girls at my school are better in PE then me :XD:
thats just crazy

PokéSonic - September 8, 2007 10:20 PM (GMT)
I agree. At least three-fourths of the girls in my school could beat me cross-country, easily. Did I mention they could do it easily?

Angie - September 10, 2007 08:22 PM (GMT)
I agree completely. I don't have physical education this trimester, but next I do. From what I hear everyone has to run a mile on the third day of p.e. at my school. Girls don't get any breaks. (:

Lol, yeah. Except today I really did need help with books. My books are like ten pounds plus my instrument and other crap. x) I thought I had a backpack in my closet that I bought this summer but it turns out either I dreamed it or my sister took it.

Kazokumaru - September 10, 2007 08:24 PM (GMT)
o.o I hate backpack thieves. They're so.... Thievy.

And today in Gym we were doing fitness. AGAIN girls were allowed to do pushups from their knees. The girls in my class are as fit, or more than me. But the ones that are athletic were doing normal pushups, so it was kind of ok.

And Angie. Did you abandon us in the Chat? :P J/k

Angie - September 10, 2007 10:10 PM (GMT)
Of course not! I've been grounded and my new teachers lovvveeeee h/w. A little different than middle school.

Joan - September 11, 2007 03:59 AM (GMT)
I have to agree with you on this one, Kazo. While I can understand some level of inequality in gym class since females tend to be weaker than males, the girls should be able to handle just five pushups.

True equality means being equal all the time, not just when it's beneficial or convenient.

Ashmoo - September 11, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
I agree too, from the other angle.

Being... well... less than athletic (ROFL) I really hate when it seems like all the girls have it easier, with "knee" push-ups and lower numbers of things to do, along with the fact that my teacher flirts with them, so they get away with anything.

Either everyone gets the same treatment, or we all get the decision.

I alos hate the continued use of such phrases as "You throw like a girl" or "You run like a girl". Even teachers taunt you with that. I really don't understand why our culture is still so sexist.

And... I'm done now.

Kazokumaru - September 12, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
YOur teacher... Flirts with them? `Scuse me whilst I go take another look at my lunch... That's a little... Illegal?

Shadow of Regice - September 12, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
Yes, girls should have equal rights! But also, girls have some advantages. For instance, at most schools, If a boy punched a girl, there would be no question they would get punished, if not suspended. If a girl punched a boy, there would be some question as to if there was a reason. I also think its stupid that there are "girl jobs". Girls should be able to do whatever they want, and it shouldn't make it harder to get a job just because you are a girl.

(I was about to sidetrack like 5 times in that lecture x_x)

Suppi - September 12, 2007 07:19 AM (GMT)
Eww! What a horrible game of dodgeball o.o I'd probably cry if I got hit!! Haha man i'm wus D:!

Yus it's very unfair, I want to do push ups on my knees xD! ... Acutally i dont want to do push ups >.<

A Gym teacher recently got imrpisoned for that at our school.

And btw, you can't really call it a debate. Everyone is going to agree with Kazo since... you just do.

Anyways, my POV. At my school, the teachers quite sexist: Girls run the 300m, Boys the 400m; In Circuit Training, Girls do about 30% less work, and they get the better teachers as they apparently are less athletic and 'need' them (although some of the girls are quite unfit). I could get thrashed by most at the girls at a fitness test though.

Ew. I used to go to a pretty crappy school for about a half year and the high school gym teacher went to jail for that. ):

Darin - September 13, 2007 05:26 PM (GMT)
Agreeing on this one as well. In a gym class it shouldn't matter who's (or should be) stronger. In a way it's still be a discrimination as it's not considered the possibilty we can do as good as the males.

Besides, by this line of thought the males should have the other subjects eased, since it's said females are better at thinking than them (it's a scientific thing I can assure you, derived from a different conformation of the brain)

At the very least, Kozukomaru, if your gym teachers keeps going like this, you can say him this and see what he replies XD

Ps. Angie the factthat teacher of yours is in jail is one of the best news I gathered in these days. Serves him right.

Ya quite just plain sad
Where im not doing PE *dances*
but im a TA in PE so I get to watch everyone do pushups and stuff so I get my daily dose of PE
But I understand the other side of the argument because I remember in 7th grade that girls hips widen and stuff around middle school age (and if you don't know well wait till 7th grade don't like to explain)
so know you see that side of the argument
*runs in case of angry mob*

Yeah, but there are still many people around who lived through those decades, and people are slow to change. It takes time. *kicks people and makes them change faster* I'd say the issues of gender and racial inequality have noticeably improved since those days, though. Not that I was around back then to know, but just from what I've learned in school. *continues kicking people and making them change anyway*

SOR, I agree with you on the "girl jobs" thing. At the same time, guys have it hard in some industries as well. I work for a court reporting agency, and I've noticed that the females far outnumber the males there, though it is equaliing out more recently. It shouldn't matter if a guy wants to be a court reporter or a nurse or a cosmetologist.

Like Charizard38 said, this isn't much of a "debate" so far. :XD: But oh well. Continue on.

Shadow of Regice - September 18, 2007 01:32 AM (GMT)
but another weird thing.... these kids at Duke were turned against just because they were white males, and the (high, drunk)prosecuter(who only came up with this when they talked about an asylum... hmmm) was african american female. :sweatdrop:

Some people are that anti--racist... so there is another extreme, which is also racist....

But a weird thing that happened at my cross country meet... All the girl that ran were withing 1min 30sec of eachother, where as the boys were 5 min apart. I belive that only girls who are confident about sports run on the team, while every boy that can sign up for the team signs up.

Alma Altars - September 25, 2007 10:08 PM (GMT)
*states opinion and runs*

I also think it's unfair that girls get it so easy as far as physical tasks, however if someone offers to help instead of just telling them it's okay to do less, that's fine.

Even if you managed to get millions of opinions on the subject, though, not many teachers would change their way of teaching. There's always that one little tiny rule that says they can do whatever they want within reason:

Rule IIIXXXVVVMILLIONANDSEVENTYFIVE: Any teacher or school official is allowed to use, enforce, and or make specific rules, limitations, or exceptions for t8heir own classes as they see fit as long as the added rules, limitations, or exceptions are within reason. Anyone challenging a rule set up by their teacher is seen as challenging that teacher's authority and will be punished.

Ashmoo - September 25, 2007 11:51 PM (GMT)
AA, was that like a quote from that stupid section in the front of our planners? I didn't know you even had one, let alone knew what it was for. (the ss hmwk...)
