The Dragonair's Den is a place of refuge for Pokemon, watched over by a benevolent spirit Dragonair called Nanami. Through the years, both good and evil Pokemon have sought her wisdom and comfort in their times of need, and she welcomed them all.
At one time, the Den had been open to humans and Pokemon. They shared a close friendship, and the two coexisted in peace. But as time passed, the number of humans grew, and they began to encroach upon the lands inhabited by Pokemon. Where lush, majestic forests once stood, department stores sprung up. Asphalt highways took the place of green, flowery meadows. The wild Pokemon tried simply adapting to the situation at first, but the humans continued to spread their civilizations further. The humans seemed to have forgotten the bond they had once shared with Pokemon.
Finally, the Pokemon decided to take action. In what became known as the Great Pokemon Uprising, Pokemon launched an attack on the humans. Little detail is known about it, but the battle was long and fierce. With their superior intellect and weapons, the humans ultimately won.
The gentle Nanami was heartbroken by the breakdown of the friendship that Pokemon and humans once shared. She retreated and sealed off her Den, allowing some Pokemon to accompany her. With the magic of her Elemental Spirit Guardians, the Dragonair's Den remains hidden from humans and Pokemon alike.
Centuries have passed since that time. The story of the Dragonair's Den continues to be passed down through the generations of Pokemon, but to the humans, it is has become a mere fairy tale. There are a few believers, but their searches have always come up empty-handed.
In modern times, the believers have many theories about the Den. Some of the most commonly accepted ones are as follows:
- The Dragonair's Den is an immense space, almost like another dimension. It can be accessed through this world somehow, but the Den itself is not physically located in this world.
- Some entire species of Pokemon unknown to this world live on within the vast space of the Den.
- From time to time, some Pokemon of those unknown species manage to cross the barrier into this world. This may happen with many species crossing over at once or just one at a time. This may explain the appearance of the latest generation of Pokemon.
- A human could possibly gain access to the Den if one collected enough of the Elemental Spirit Guardians. However, few have the courage (or perhaps just foolishness) to attempt to collect these immortal beings, and none have been successful.
Those are, of course, just unproven theories at this time.
Today you have come to Professor Melinda's Laboratory to obtain a starter Pokemon, the first step on your quest to find Nanami and the Dragonair's Den.
What will you do if you find Nanami? Will you bring her back to this world and show her that humans are not all bad? Will you harness her power to take over the world? Maybe you have something totally different in mind. Has she remained kindhearted, or has the passage of thousands of years changed her? These questions do not need to be answered now, but you may wish to ponder these things during your journey.
