Title: The Spam Bot Filtration System
Description: Or the SBFS for short.
Charizard38 - January 4, 2007 06:24 PM (GMT)
We're all getting annoyed with the spam bots, so I've got an idea to filter them out...
1) What happened to the Validating System? I remember waiting eagerly for 3 days for my name to change from orange to green, so why not now? I just see all these new members, who come and SPAM us. Validating members should not be able to post new topics (not even the Aloha forum. We don't want to spam that board), and only reply to certain topics.
2) Next, according to the RHQForums (which will stay as it's abbrievation, because I don't want to send spammers there), there is a thing called 'Post Moderation'. This means that any of our kind and loving mod's and admin's must approve of a topic (or post if you like) before it appears to us ordinary folk. Maybe we should put everyone under 30 posts on that?
3) Isn't IP Banning working? I can hardly believe that these Spammers change their IP on a daily basis.
That's the main idea, here are a couple different ones:
4) This approach sholud only taken if they really spam us. Why don't we change the domain again?
5) Don't over-react, with things like I HATE SPAMMERS in the Violations Forum. OK, I used to do it, but maybe the fact that we just find it boring and immature will drive them away. They are trying to annoy us, so don't let them! (If they are getting really annoying, just do whatever you do to get rid of stress. Don't tell us about it).
(That last point might be slightly hippocritical, because the purpose of this topic is to show that we hate soamers.)
6) Send them to hell. OK, maybe not.
So, that is the SBFS in a nutshell. Please post your comments and improvements!

I would have to agree with all your points but the post moderating system, it would totally irratate and annoy new members, and the questions forum would be full of it. I really think the vadilating system should be set to Admin overview, and I wish I could do something about it.
Charizard38 - January 4, 2007 09:08 PM (GMT)
Fair enough, it seems fair that new innocent members shouldn't suffer. I'll keep that idea there though.

BUT! We could make them take a test. Like:
1. Did you ever joined a message board?
2. Did you ever get BANNED from a message board?
And so on and so forth.

Nice idea, but how many SPAMmers are going to tell the truth on the matter?

That is actually not a half-bad idea, but not in the way you put it. Because spammers do not post anything but their spam topic, so they won't bother with that topic, and won't bother with the forum. :P
But there is also a downside, wherever the test is... it would be a place where Spammers could post. x_x

Email.
I know when they are telling the truth.
Silverpelt - January 5, 2007 09:08 PM (GMT)
How would that work? Would one person send millions of E-mails to all new members or what? There is no such thing in the Admin CP to send automatic E-mails, besides the news notifier, which would send Emails to every single member on Dragonairs Den.

Hello :) Firestarter here.. an admin.. Just so you know.. IT IS on admin Validation and I PERSONALLY delete all members that have horrible names.. Anything with 3 x's or anything gross like that o.o
And validating members should not be able to post anywhere but the games forum and o.o aloha o.o .... ... yeah....
okay sorry that was rude x.x but seriously I try to get rid of them before they post .. but sometimes it is just... normal looking names that start all this crap <.<
Helion-Turox - January 6, 2007 05:44 AM (GMT)
Its true...sometimes the Spammers have Usernames that are pokemon related..
Recently i saw a member with a username Arragon but the username was just a sheep in wolves clothing as the member posted a Spam topic. Since then i have never seen the member post....

Oh, sorry. I've just never seen a Validating Member for a while, that's all.

That's another problem - the Spammers no somewhat something about pokemon.
We need some more idea people, so keep 'em comin'!

These spam bots dont have IP addresses. There virus's... So thats why i adsive to NOT click on any of there links that lead to 'wonderful' things as they say x.x
Fire Starter - January 7, 2007 05:11 AM (GMT)
lol I never do.. I simply delete them lol
Silverpelt - January 7, 2007 05:41 AM (GMT)
Neither do I, but the Spambots do seem to have individual IP Adresses normally.

If they don't have IP addresses, can't you block not having an IP address? I'm lost (lol). I thought they did have an IP address...

They do, and you can't block no IPs.

GREAT NEW IDEA!!
Well, you know them fuzzy registration codes you see when registering to say... hotmail, why don't we have one of them?
Silverpelt - January 8, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
You already get them, after making a mistake when registrating the first time.
Blaziken93 - January 20, 2007 03:47 AM (GMT)
Well, here's a wild suggestion, close down the fourms for a bit x_x. Mabey they'll leave and never come back. Or mabey they'll just keep coming back until the fourm is reopened. :sweatdrop:

I think I know what you're talking about, but I wouldn't know how to implement that. I don't think I have the authority to add things like that to the registration system.
New registration is temporarily disabled. While I can't make any technical changes to the registration system, I can change the process by which new members join. That probably didn't make any sense, but just nod and smile. Joan has a good idea and she's used up all her sensibility on that idea.
lopfot - February 5, 2007 01:43 AM (GMT)
You can find the code somewhere online so you put it in your style sheet or something. Then it edits the registration thingus.
Hawkstorm - February 6, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
YAy I get to post ^^ Okies, Here we go:
Charizards list and what I think of em:
1) It prolly wouldn't matter, so we wouldn't know who was a Spammer or not.
2) Prolly would work. But why wait for all your posts to be approved by a mod?
3) Nope. They CAN change their IP to get around bans like that.
4) Ehrm... Prolly because we've changed it sooo much. Dunno, take it up with Joan. xD
5) Meh, I'm irratated easily xD
6) YES! Let's murder them on the way there. >-]

Thanks. I'll try that one. It's simpler than what I was planning to do.
