Here's a poem I made up for the fourth generation (and for the 10-year anniversary of course!) The first few lines of Chapter 2 don't really rhyme, but it's OK.
Chapter 1
There are five hundred of them living now.
But have you ever even put your mind
On, ten years ago, exactly how
There was a giant leap for Pokémon-kind?
Sci-fi ideas are never weary,
Especially the one made up long ago
By a wishful old man, Satoshi Tajiri,
And put into play by Shigeru Miyamoto.
What wishes did they have? They wanted to
Make bugs live out longer, larger lives:
"A video game! Now there is something new!"
And so they made one up in 1995.
They hadn't even yet given thought, to selling it in the west,
But over in Japan, people began to like it the very best...
Chapter 2
A video game? Was this a good new idea?
Yes it was. It was less violent, but more fantastic
And kids were yelling out for anime that year
So when they made one up, they went ballistic!
Who knew that that night in 1995
They could have gotten the brain-wave that started it all?
Red and Blue and Green, they were now alive:
"I'll catch you later... in a Poké Ball."
Trading and fighting and winning the house down,
For some kids every night began to go that way.
The word rang out across the street and the town
And even across the sea, where here it was day!
Cartoons hit the air, trading card games for the active fans,
A hundred and fifty Pokémon, and lots and lots of big plans...
Chapter 3
Now all fanatics knew that the sea was not the end.
Places lay beyond, with people everywhere.
Satoshi Tajiri and Shigeru, his friend,
Knew equally well: they should send games over there.
And they hired a translator who worked at a bank
To put an English game on the market, that fellow.
It would soon be hitting all us Canucks and Yanks.
"What the heck? I'll call the Blue game 'Yellow'!"
Then with all their money, they called some boats
And loaded them with Game Boys, cards and TVs.
Satoshi and Shigeru put on their coats
And waved goodbye as they sailed across the sea.
Finally, three days later, with a welcome, they arrived into our land.
Video game stores were crowded, and all TV shops were manned...
Chapter 4
Any true fan can remember that fateful day
When the boat hit our Pacific Ocean shore.
In about half a second, every which way,
There were games east, north and south, and perhaps even more
Fans waiting to buy one: a shiny new Red or Blue
Game. The malls were ringing music left and right.
"Doo doo doot-doot-doo, doo-doo-doot-doot-doo, doo-doo-dootdoot-dootdoot-doo..."
Each 10-year-old boy or girl couldn't wait to get one tonight.
And so Red and Blue were such wild sellers
(Literally wild like a Rattata on a trail!)
That some of the stores and video game fellers
Had to send the games later, through the mail.
Maniacs and brainiacs were just breaking through the ground.
And it wasn't very long before MORE spin-offs were found...
Chapter 5
Not just the games, but the show and the cards
Had found their way into here in a jiffy.
Training, for kids, while it may be a bit hard,
Would always turn the kids faddish and nifty.
You could trade the cards, you could watch the show,
You could send the marbles down the chutes.
You could even hatch real eggs, with tiny low-
Levelled Pokémon as your pieces of loot
Which you could collect or roll or shatter.
A hundred and fifty! Hard work they must have done,
Satoshi and Shigeru, making up the battles
And that was only the start of round one.
Super Smash Bros., Stadium and Snap were next to arrive.
You took pictures, fought polygons, tried to stay alive...
niceness.
Cahpter one doens't really....flow i guess....for me.
Well, I guess it's time to continue. The line "xyzzy, plugh, plover" are three cheat codes from the very old video game Colossal Cave Adventure. The "$$$" in Chapter 7 means "cash."
Chapter 6
Soon Konami sent Yu-Gi-Oh cards over here
And the "fad" of Pokémon was slowing a bit.
But was it going to totally disappear?
The verdict was No. And now, how it
Was taking shape on the four islands of Japan
Where Satoshi Tajiri wrote and designed.
"Let's add a hundred new ones, oh, man!"
Gold, Silver and Crystal were in his mind
And Shiggy shared his ideas, too. Over
In North America, we waited for the games.
"I'm getting tired of this xyzzy, plugh, plover
And I'm sure Poké-fans are thinking the same!"
Violet, Azalea, Cianwood, Olivine, Goldenrod and standing by,
Blackthorn, Mahogany, Cherrygrove, New Bark, Victory Road... oh my!
Chapter 7
It was time for the blueprint to be revised.
If I had been there, in the factory,
I'd say "The most perfect game ever devised!
I'll buy one now!" And eventually,
After Y2K had come to an end,
After my Macintosh survived the crash,
The boats were filled with boxes of games
To be sent to North America for $$$.
Having thrown out their Game Boys, some fans
Went to the dump to snatch them back.
"They're selling, they're selling! Selling in stores!"
Every player watched their Chikorita attack.
Cyndaquil and Totodile could not resist this call,
But the moral of the story was: you had gotta catch them all.
